Sunday Sessions - STEVE WHALLEY 8.30pm

Steve Whalley has drawn the attention of and consequently forged working collaborations with some of the very foundations of British and American popular and traditional music. Some artists include Chuck Berry, Ry Cooder, Taj Mahal, James Burton, Jerry Donohue, Sir Cliff Richard, T.Rex and the list goes on.

With reference to James Burton, Steve was the choice as frontman vocalist/guitar for the promotion of the “James Burton” signature series “Telecaster” for Fender UK Ltd. This event covered by the National press with Sir Cliff Richard and Shakin’ Stevens singing backup vocals. As an artist touring the world at high profile level, to this day he is equally at home in small clubs as he is in a Grand Concert Hall.

In Between his own shows, Steve took over for Noddy Holder as the frontman for 70’s powerhouse group Slade for 16 years. It was during these years he worked with all the big acts of that era, in particular the legendary T.Rex which featured his friend and confidante, drummer Paul Fenton and the great Mickey Finn.

Wherever Steve appears, the audience is left spellbound by his powerful rock and soulful voice. His guitar style combines immense power and unorthodox savvy, ranging from cooderesque Slide/Bottleneck, thru Gospel, Soul, Rock and more. Steve has recorded for the major labels such as Phonogram, Mercury, Zomba and Spectra.

Steve is currently on tour with the Rock Classic All Stars for Alba concerts in Germany as well as his own show featuring slide acoustic, mandolin and hot strat, peppered with great humor and an endearing sense of humility. In his own words, “An Honest Broker in the Bank of Melodies.”

An Evening With - NED ROBERTS 8.30pm

Ned Roberts is an acoustic singer-songwriter based in London. Raised in a musical family (his father is renowned classical pianist Paul Roberts), Ned first started gigging when living up in York, playing old folk covers and the odd Dylan tune. Not long after writing his first songs, he was discovered by producer Luther Russell (Sarabeth Tucek, Richmond Fontaine, Noah & The Whale) and brought to Los Angeles to record. The pair have since developed a close creative parternship.

The first single culled from these fruitful sessions was "Red Sun", which featured frequently on BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio Scotland, and Radio 3 in Spain. On the heels of this came the single "Blues #6", featuring vocals by acclaimed songstress Sarabeth Tucek. The track was championed by Lauren Laverne, Jo Whiley, Gideon Coe, and Huey Morgan on BBC Radio. His debut self-titled album was released to great acclaim in 2014, garnering significant national press, notably from the Guardian and Uncut magazine. Live sessions for BBC Radio London and Bob Harris' Radio 2 show soon followed.

No stranger to the road, Ned has toured the UK extensively. He attained a much sought after support tour with celebrated US songwriter Anais Mitchell, and has also supported the likes of Joe Pug, Micah P. Hinson, The Delines and Sarabeth Tucek. He has also toured the West Coast of the US, embarked on a 14-date tour of Germany supporting Steve Folk, as well as gigs in France, Spain and Italy.

In 2015, Ned returned to Los Angeles to record, once again with producer Luther Russell at the helm. The resulting album, Outside My Mind – expertly mastered by John Fischbach (Stevie Wonder, Carole King) – is striking, showcasing a greater confidence in both his material and voice, adding an Americana expanse to the folk foundations of his eponymous debut. These songs sit comfortably among the classics of the Laurel Canyon era. Look out for the release of Outside My Mind later in 2016.
Absolutely gorgeous stuff...one to really get excited about' – Lauren Laverne, BBC 6Music

Sunday Sessions - CAROUSEL 8.30pm

The 4-piece Indie Americana music collective are based in Southend-on-Sea on the coast of Essex, UK. Carousel fuse Americana, country, folk, rock’n’roll, blues and roots music into their own unique approach whilst taking full advantage of having 4 accomplished vocalists at their disposal. The band’s influences include an array of artists from Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash to the modern day Americana stylings of Brandi Carlile and The Lone Bellow. The band’s aim is to breathe new life into music venues and street-level performances around the UK, with a view to remove the barrier between artist and audience.

Carousel was founded in the summer of 2015, following the decision that four good friends and solo musicians would come together, with the ideology that they are better together than they are apart. Music is as much a part of one band member as the next and it is something that is a constant staple in each of their lives. Sharing a musical vision that is encompassed by friendship and honesty, Carousel present a fresh take on passionate and heartfelt music. Their songs are both uplifting and sombre. Wistful yet forward-looking.

Two years in the making, Carousel have finally released their debut EP, which includes five of their most energising and emotive songs. They have performed on a number of festival bills this summer; most notably Leigh Folk Festival, Live Expressions Festival, Daxtonbury Festival and are becoming increasingly sought after within the UK’s live music scene.
